Avanceon: Pakistan's Global Industrial Automation Experts

In a remarkable narrative of vision and tenacity, a Pakistani engineering firm transformed from a modest startup—where managers had to share computers—into a global automation powerhouse now competing directly with multinational industrial titans.

This is the journey of Avanceon, a firm which empowers industries to operate smarter and more sustainably through cutting-edge automation and digital transformation.

In this VCast interview, we sit down with the company’s executive leadership to learn about its inspiring growth story and bold ambitions.

Avanceon started as a product company, buying, selling and supporting the installation of products in Pakistan. At the time, the country's automation industry was dominated by foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) from Singapore, the US, and Europe, who would send engineers to execute projects on-site. However, once they departed, there was no local, ongoing support. Avanceon identified this weakness and dedicated itself to building local expertise, becoming one of the first systems integrators in Pakistan capable of programming PLC (programmable logic controller) systems—the industrial computers that are a foundational technology of Industry 4.0 (the fourth industrial revolution).

Avanceon’s focus on developing local talent and engineering skills was the bedrock of its strategy, allowing it to offer superior, on-the-ground support that positioned it to compete with international OEMs and even Fortune 500 companies such as Honeywell and ABB.

Their relentless focus on quality and skill development quickly paid off. Within seven years, Avanceon had partnered with every major manufacturing company in Pakistan willing to invest in process automation.

The company also expanded from individual boiler and chiller automation projects to executing complete plant automation for all the major fertilizer plants and refineries in the country. A landmark achievement was designing and implementing the complete SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems for the entire oil and gas pipeline network across Pakistan. This domestic dominance served as the crucial springboard for international expansion.

A defining moment in their global journey came during a 2007 bid for a project with oil giant Saudi Aramco. When the project director learned that Avanceon had no prior experience working with Aramco or in Saudi Arabia, he nearly ended the meeting. However, after a presentation detailing their extensive work in Pakistan and the UAE, his stance transformed completely. He remarked that he had never seen such a company and approved Avanceon to become the first firm to conduct a factory acceptance test for Aramco in its UAE facility.

Today, Avanceon is a robust enterprise delivering projects worth $60-70 million, with over 300 ongoing projects. A staggering 80% of its revenue now comes from projects in the Middle East. Its impressive portfolio includes environmental and air turbulence management systems for metro networks in Dubai, Doha, and Riyadh; the world’s largest district cooling plant, which provides air conditioning to the Ka’baa; and a groundbreaking “smart country” project with the Qatari government—an initiative described as an Industry 5.0 project that is 20 years ahead of the market.

Their supplies and partners are all global now as well.

The companies we compete with, like Schneider, Rockwell, Siemens—you name it—are our best partners. We are at the highest level of partnership.
— Bakhtiar H. Wain, Founder & CEO, Avanceon Limited

Despite its global footprint, the company’s operational backbone remains firmly anchored in Pakistan. Its Karachi office houses the core proposal, execution, finance, HR, and marketing hubs that support all international operations. This unique back-office model, was refined through the acquisition of a company in Pennsylvania, USA, which was a market leader in systems integration. This experience helped Avanceon adopt global best practices in engineering and internationalization, building a scalable model that enables rapid entry into new markets like Southeast Asia by focusing solely on client acquisition. All engineering and processes are immediately transferable.

The company attributes its 20-year sustained growth to a culture of transparency and employee development. Operating with an open-door policy and an unwavering emphasis on ethics, Avanceon has fostered an environment of friendship and meritocracy. It reinvests in its people through employee stock options (ESOPs), ensuring that the wealth created is shared. Notably, around 95% of its leaders are homegrown talent who joined as trainees—a testament to its powerful employee retention and development strategy. For Avanceon, its people are the ultimate asset, as they propel this knowledge-based company toward continued global expansion with confidence, ready to compete with the best in the world.
